How to Survive and Alien Invasion on your Water System
Attend the Intermountain Section AWWA’s Educational Extravaganza Midyear Conference on April 6th to find out how to survive an alien attack on your water system. The news about the Flint, MI crisis is in virtually every major newscast and on the news and editorial pages of media outlets in North America and beyond. Redox and lead in drinking water are just two of the “Aliens” that water operators fight every day in the quest to protect public health and provide safe and affordable water service to their customers. We will explore ways to prepare you against invaders, methods to reduce the risk of an alien invasion, the right things to do and where to get assistance during an attack, and means to clean up the mess following an apocalyptic event!
There are many things, both large and small, that operators do each day, that generally go unnoticed, in the battle to fight foreign invaders to our water, infrastructure, operations and maintenance procedures. Other foreign invaders that can attack water systems are:
-
Cyano Toxins
-
Earthquakes and other natural disasters
-
Lead and other metals
-
Personal Care Products and Pharmaceuticals
-
Corrosion in pipelines and other water facilities
-
Bacteria
-
Quagga Mussels
-
Aging Infrastructure
-
Taste & Odor
-
Waterborne Pathogens
By applying lessons learned from Flint and other events the Educational Extravaganza will help operators be personally better prepared for alien invasions on the water systems they operate.
