Michael J. McGuire is a nationally recognized expert in the water industry who has authored The Chlorine Revolution: Water Disinfection and the Fight to Save Lives, published in April 2013 by the American Water Works Association. Michael will tell the story about how a courageous physician and a great sanitary engineer in the early 1900s planned, built and operated the first, large-scale drinking water disinfection system in the U.S. But, the story does not stop there, it also includes a controversial court case that extended over two trials that pitted engineering and scientific experts of the day against one another. The verdict approving the use of chlorine for the Jersey City water supply caused an explosion of its use, which led to the conquest of waterborne disease in the U.S.
Michael will talk about these great Disinfection Pioneers and how we can extrapolate their experiences in using chlorine to help save lives in the early 20th Century to the present day and the challenges the water community has ahead.
