Water Week 2014

Water Week, organized under the Youth and Consumer Education Committee, ran this year from Sunday May 4th through Saturday May 10th and was full great activities highlighting the importance of water in our lives. The theme this year was Water: From the Mountains to My Home which was chosen to highlight that the water in our mountains is what we eventually drink and then return to the environment.

Several of the events that were held during Water Week have become annual traditions such as the poster contest sponsored by the Utah Division of Water Resources, the Library program where each library in Utah receives a water related children’s book to highlight during the week, and the various tours of water treatment facilities and conservation gardens.

Additionally this year we added some new events such as the pharmaceutical take back event where people could bring their expired prescription drugs to dispose of them in an environmentally safe way. Also new this year coordinating with the Division of Water Quality and USU Extension on Water Watch Utah were citizens can participate by helping to monitor the water quality of various water bodies throughout the State. We also sponsored a video contest and stepped up our social media program.

Much of our success is due to faithful volunteers, Intermountain Section staff, and our Water Week Sponsors. We are already looking forward to next year and if you have an event or idea you would like to see included, or if you would like to participate on the committee please contact Shazelle Terry at 801-446-2004 or shazellet@jvwcd.org
