Using Utility Management Standards to Optimize Operations

In the September 2016 Journal AWWA article, titled "Using Utility Management Standards to Optimize Operations," authors, Eva Nieminski, Kan Oberoi, Chi Ho Sham, and Gerard Yates, describe the benefits of applying AWWA's Utility Management Standards to improve operations.  Successful application of Standards G-100, G-200, and G-300 is demonstrated through case study examples, highlighting the benefits realized by drinking water utilities.  Hank Childers and Washington County Water Conservancy District were highlighted in the article for their use of the G-100 Standard to examine what they were doing well and what needed improvement.  Other systems included Partnership for Safe Water subscriber and Directors Award recipient, Beaver Water District (Arkansas), and the City of Montrose, Colorado.

For more than 100 years AWWA has developed voluntary standards of minimum requirements for materials, equipment and practices used in water treatment and supply. AWWA Standards are used by thousands of manufacturers, distributors and water treatment facilities worldwide to ensure the highest quality products and service.  The AWWA Utility Management Standards (also known as the G-Series Standards) allow utilities to easily assess system limitations, optimize operations, and identify needed changes.
